About Us
We are the Arroyo Grande High School Social Science Department.
We are committed to helping students better understand the people, ideas, events, and institutions that shape our world.
Through courses in history, civics and government, economics, psychology, and ethnic studies, students develop the critical-thinking, communication, and analytical skills needed to examine complex issues and make informed decisions.
Our department strives to create engaging, rigorous classrooms that connect the past to the present, encourages thoughtful discussion, and prepares students to participate meaningfully in their communities and the wider world.

AGHS - Friday Night Live (FNL)Friday Night Live is a student-led prevention and leadership club focused on promoting healthy choices, positive mental health, and substance use prevention on the AGHS campus. Through an evidence-based, youth-driven approach, students work alongside adult advisors to develop leadership, advocacy, and decision-making skills while planning activities and campaigns that support the well-being of their peers. Members also connect with the wider community through volunteer service, outreach, and advocacy projects, giving students opportunities to make a positive impact both on campus and throughout the local community.

AGHS (SLOCOE) Mock TrialAGHS Mock Trial is an academic competition team that gives students the opportunity to experience the legal system through simulated courtroom trials. Each year, students prepare a hypothetical criminal or civil case, taking on roles such as attorneys, witnesses, clerks, and bailiffs while developing skills in public speaking, critical thinking, argumentation, teamwork, and legal analysis. The team competes against other middle and high schools throughout San Luis Obispo County as part of the California Mock Trial Program, culminating in a public county competition each February. Through the program, students gain a practical understanding of the judicial system while building confidence, communication skills, and the ability to think and respond under pressure.
